THE SPIRIT OF THE TARGET LANGUAGE/EL ESPÍRITU DE LA LENGUA OBJETIVO

Another principle of the Silent Way is the belief that learning is enabled if it is accompanied by physical objects. Therefore, coloured rulers and pronunciation charts provide a focal point which enables both the learning process and the retention of what was learned. In psychological terms, it can be said that such visual elements serve as mediators of association both in learning and in remembering. Gattegno also relates his method to a succession of proposals that are based upon problem solving. The involvement of the participant in the learning process as an active agent promotes greater learning and retention of what was learned, as information is processed with a greater cognitive depth. This is correct, and it was also proven long ago that the memory of the participant benefits through search, discovery and creative development. For this reason, confronting the participant with the problem of producing the appropriate enunciate in the target language leads him to learn it “through his own perceptual and analytical powers.” This way, it is expected that the participant becomes free and autonomous. Likewise, special attention is given to what Gattegno calls the “spirit of the language.” By this concept, we understand the form in which each language combines the phonological and supra-segmental elements in order to construct a melody and a system of distinctive sounds. The participant must develop the spirit of the target language as soon as possible. This is achieved with the learning of what is known in the Silent Way as functional vocabulary, i.e. that vocabulary which is most important for the participant and which refers to the most functional and versatile words in the language, many of which cannot have a direct equivalence in the vernacular language of the participant. According to Gattegno, this functional vocabulary is the clue to understand the spirit of the target language.

Otro de los principios de la Vía Silenciosa consiste en la creencia de que se facilita el aprendizaje si se acompaña de objetos físicos. Por lo tanto, las regletas de colores y los cuadros de pronunciación con colores proporcionan un foco de atención que facilitan tanto el proceso de aprendizaje como la retención de lo aprendido. En términos psicológicos, se puede decir que tales elementos visuales sirven de mediadores de asociación tanto en el aprendizaje como en el recuerdo. Gattegno también relaciona su método con una sucesión de proposiciones que se fundamentan en la solución de problemas. La implicación del participante en el proceso de aprendizaje como agente activo promueve un mayor aprendizaje y retención de lo aprendido al procesarse la información con mayor profundidad cognitiva. Esto es correcto y además se ha demostrado desde hace mucho tiempo que la memoria del participante se beneficia de la búsqueda, el descubrimiento y el desarrollo creativo. Por lo que el enfrentamiento del participante con el problema de producir un enunciado apropiado en la lengua objetivo le lleva a aprenderla “... a través de sus propios poderes perceptuales y analíticos”. De tal forma se espera que el participante se haga independiente y autónomo. Asimismo se da mucha importancia a lo que Gattegno llama el “espíritu de la lengua”. Entendiéndose por tal concepto a la forma en la que cada lengua combina los elementos fonológicos y suprasegmentales para construir una melodía y un sistema de sonidos distintivos. El participante debe desarrollar ese espíritu de la lengua objetivo tan pronto como sea posible. Esto se lleva a cabo con el aprendizaje de lo que se conoce en la Vía Silenciosa como el vocabulario funcional, es decir, aquel vocabulario más importante para el participante que se refiere a las palabras más funcionales y versátiles de la lengua, muchas de las cuales pueden no tener equivalencia directa en la lengua vernácula del participante. Este vocabulario funcional es el meollo, según Gattegno, para comprender el espíritu de la lengua objetivo.
