LEARN AND RETAIN/APRENDER Y RETENER

According to the Silent Way, human beings have two systems: one to learn and another one to retain. The first one is activated only as a consequence of intelligent consciousness, the participant constantly proving his powers of abstraction, analysis, synthesis, and integration. Here, it is estimated that silence is the best way to learn, for with silence, participants concentrate on the task and the resources they can use to accomplish it. However, repetition is considered only to be time-consuming and helping the mind to distract and to keep in that distracted state practically all the time. According to this theory, silence, considered to be the absence of repetition, is an aid in order to keep alert, concentrated, and organised. Regarding the so-called retention system, silence is also the clue, according to Gattegno, to achieve knowledge and, consequently, the best way for retention. Retention unions are indeed formed in the most silent periods, i.e. during sleep, in which the mind undertakes much of its retention work.
In general, the Imperative is, once again, as it happens with the Total Physical Response, the structure which is presented at the initial phase, it seems, because of the disposition with which action verbs, using materials created by Gattegno, may be demonstrated.
