FUNCTIONAL/LSP MODEL- MODELO FUNCIONAL/LSP

7. Functional/LSP Model

The initials LSP stand for Language for Specific Purposes, i.e. learning a language with specific objectives in mind. This term, frequently used in Anglo-Saxon linguistic environments, emphasises relevance. In other words, it emphasises what a specific participant needs the target language for. Therefore, a careful technical revision is performed in order to evaluate the students’ needs. The needs may be framed as the kind of social situations, linguistic context, area of specialty, communicative functions, etc., that the participant will meet at the end of the course. The techniques, procedures, and activities to be used will be developed by the instructor according to the analysis of needs undertaken. An authentic didactic material, developed with the collaboration of the participant, is used for teaching. Linguistic abilities needed by the participant are the ones to be practised in class. Hence, as a general example, if the participant needs the target language mainly to read, the course concentrates on the reading abilities and little emphasis is put on verbal communication. Another important feature is the fact that the mother tongue of the participant is used for explanations and discussion when deemed pertinent. Here, the instructor must posses a good basic knowledge of the area of specialty of the participant, for example, Medicine, Economy, Electrical Engineering, etc. Likewise, the instructor must correctly express in the language of the participant. As it is always adults who require knowing one or several foreign languages for labour reasons, emphasis is made on the participant and not on language textbooks. The participant finds himself in a specific course because of well-defined reasons. For example, he has to learn Spanish because his job requires that he sell Danish furniture in Spanish-speaking countries. In this specific case, the instructor’s job is, fundamentally, to teach him how to sell furniture in the target language. The instructor need not teach all the details of the Spanish language to this individual. There is no time for that. The objective is to sell furniture in a foreign language and this is what he is going to learn. Therefore, emphasis is made on teaching the participant how to perform a specific task in the target language, and not to teach him the whole system involved in the respective language.
Despite the previous statements, one must refrain from thinking that the Functional approach is restricted or limited. No, because a language is always unique and the same, for, regardless of the purpose for which it is going to be used, each language possesses a specific terminology. Spanish grammar, for example, possesses the same structure in different types of situations and professions. The difference lies in vocabulary and terminology. And this is what involves a Functional Model, in which the instructor, as he teaches the structure of the target language, introduces terminology, expressions, etc., depending on the specific case.

7. Modelo Funcional/LSP.
